Staging excellent FIS Alpine World Ski Championships Åre 2019 is the main mission of Åre 2019 AB. The 2019 edition will be the third time that the community of Åre hosts the flagship event in skiing, after the previous ones in 2007 and 1954. Tonight, we kick things off for real at Åre Square.
Skiing has played a large role for Åre throughout history and the 2019 Championships seek to take advantage of the town’s unique position to “Inspire the World to ski.” To become part of the journey to February 2019, the entire community of Åre is invited to the village square to see the official launch of the countdown to 4 February 2019, the official opening ceremony of the Championships.
The unveiling of the Åre 2019 Count-Down Clock presented by Longines will take place Thursday at 18:00 CET at Åre Square. Longines is the official time-keeper of the FIS Ski World Cup and of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and they have created the unique timing piece that will from now on be counting the time left until the Championships next February.
The count-down clock unveiling will be combined with the draw of the starting numbers for the Longines Future Ski Champions race that will take place on Friday, 16 March (giant slalom 10:30/11:30 in the National Arena). This Longines event is an international competition for junior male skiers under the age of 16 each representing one of the nations that stage Audi FIS Ski World Cup races in this year’s calendar. The participants are promising young skiers – female and male in alternating years – who have won a national selection event; last year the event took place in St Moritz during the World Championships.
